CBS says the pictures it obtained show a wide range of abuses, including:

* Prisoners with wires attached to their genitals

* A dog attacking a prisoner

* Prisoners being forced to simulate having sex with each other

* A detainee with an abusive word written on his body.

Not saying that American troops are monsters but I remember someone insisting that every single american soldier is a great hero cuz he enlisted. I think this paints a clear picture of how there are a lot of slack jawed yokels in the American armed forces

Concerning that you call these specific soldiers "american heros."

A few acting that way doesn't mean that they all do. Those few are definitely not heroes and I don't think anyone would say they were. They give a bad name to the american armed forces in an area where they need to be seen to be fair, honest and upstanding in their actions. The whole world is watching and a good portion of the world would like nothing better than to be able to shake their heads and say "The americans aren't any better than Saddam and his henchmen."

Military spokesman 'disgusted' by prison photos
Friday, April 30, 2004 Posted: 8:11 AM EDT (1211 GMT)

The pictures have made headlines in the European press.

(CNN) -- A coalition military spokesman says he is "disgusted" by photographs that apparently show U.S. soldiers abusing detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad.

The photographs, first aired on a U.S. television network, were being shown by Arab television networks Friday.

CBS says it has "dozens" of pictures showing a wide range of abuse.

One picture apparently shows an Iraqi prisoner standing on a box with his head covered, wires attached to his hands.

CNN has not verified the authenticity of the images.

Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the coalition's deputy chief of operations, told CNN Friday he was "appalled that fellow soldiers who wear same uniforms as us would do this.

"They let us down. It is hard to provide any way to provide any excuse ... they crossed the line and violated every tenet we teach in the army about dignity and respect," he said.

The U.S. military says six U.S. soldiers have been charged with abusing inmates at the prison.

Kimmitt said he has met with representatives of Iraq's newspapers to discuss how to report the story.

Iraq does not publish newspapers on Friday, the Muslim holy day.

Some Baghdad residents, who saw the images Friday, told CNN's Ben Wedeman they were angered by the photographs. (More reaction)

An investigation began in January after a soldier reported the alleged abuse to superiors, Kimmitt said earlier this week.

Kimmitt would not disclose the charges or details of the abuse, but said military authorities take any such reports seriously.

"We are committed to treating all persons under coalition custody with dignity, respect and humanity," he said.

"Coalition personnel are expected to act appropriately, humanely and in a manner consistent with the Geneva Conventions."

In February, senior military officials said 17 troops, including a battalion commander, a company commander and 12 MPs assigned to guard prisoners, had been relieved of duty until an investigation could be completed.

Sources previously told CNN that the abuse came to light based on reports from other soldiers and photographs showing detainees being abused by prison guards.

They're idiots for taking pictures. I also found it interesting that it says they 'were assisting interrogators from US intelligence agencies.'

Edit: Or taking pictures was a way to document it when whoever reported it.

Dogg
April 30th, 2004, 09:37
Yeah - basically they probably took the pictures for who knows what reason, but they agreed with the torture, BUT damn...when the story broke...guess whos rich or famous...

This kind of thing happens in all wars. There's always a time when POWs aren't going to be detained by Geneva Convention-humping bastards. Not all American soldiers are trustworthy today just as not all German soldiers were infamous in 1940.

hmmmm guess they came from that other prison the US has....ya know, that place where law doesnt apply so they can detain people without trial, lawyers, or even basic human rights...

Krone, the Geneva convention isnt a bad thing. I know you like to think prisoners dont deserve to be treated decently, and that you probably, deep down inside, think those torturing soldiers are heroes... But that convention is a good thing.

I hate to tell you muffin, but those prisoners there have it pretty well, the younger ones are educated while they're held as well.... most of the prisoners have a better quality of life in Guantanamo than they do back home, and as for your accusations, how many times have you been there to see all these evils?

^^ Thats what i was going to say. Reports from people that were released said they were treated quite well there. They even went to far as to say they liked their captors (but not the government) despite the situation.

Yeah yeah whatever. I guess that the US soldiers were in fact disguised Palestinians, that Guantanmo is in fact a recreation camp where nothing bad happened and prisonners live happy lifes and have happy thoughts with nice guards giving them mellow greetings, and that Bush is the solution to all evil. Except to evil Palestians, because thats Sharon's job.
I also suppose that I'm a communist nazi husseinite, that polluting the air has no consequence, that having guns for everyone is the ultimate solution to peace in the streets worldwide, that 12 yr old raped girls must keep their babies at all costs, that artists are in fact lazy asses all wanting to live on welfare money, that white people are more and more discriminated against, etc etc...
And all in all, it is all the fault of one and single man : John Kerry.
